Navigating a Career Shift Outside Your Comfort Zone

Top 5 Tips

AI, Telehealth, Cybersecurity, Renewable Energy, Blockchain, Sustainable Development—these are the industries sparking excitement today. Entertaining thoughts of a career switch? Before diving into uncharted waters, weigh your options. If this isn't just a hobby and you're seriously considering a career change, especially if funds are tight and unpaid internships aren't on the table, here are five essential steps to prepare for your journey:

1) Stay grounded and humble yourself: Imagine a hiring manager on the lookout for the perfect Major League Baseball player. They wouldn't go for a walk-on with a D1 Football background, even if that person happened to snag a Heisman trophy.

2) Find a mentor: Reach out to leaders in the industry and division that interests you. Learn about how they got started, ask for advice. Build relationships - your best bet in getting your foot in the door is by way of a strong referral.

3) Go back to school: Literally, if it suits you. Figuratively, if it doesn’t. Luckily, we have a world of knowledge and experience at our fingertips - read, read, read. Learn about the market, competitive landscape, everything you can to give you a strong understanding of potential challenges the companies you’re interested in are facing. Consider getting certified in relevant coursework.

4) Figure out your why and create a video cover letter around it: I personally don’t suggest applying for jobs in this market, in general. You’ll hear me say this over and over - sadly, too many recruiters today are just not putting candidates first. And if you’re lucky enough to have your resume seen, it’s highly likely you’ll be passed on if you have no industry experience. Create a video, market yourself to leaders in your chosen space; make friends with strong recruiters that specialize in the industry.

5) Network: Consider going to an industry event and pass out business cards with a QR code for your video cover letter. Remember the thing I said above about hiring an MLB player? One thing many hiring managers love and view as the exception is drive, and true interest. Don’t apply everywhere. Find the companies you’re interested in, identify the decision makers, make friends with employees, and stand out.

It’s not impossible to change careers mid-career. Do these five things and really focus on your desire - ignore the noise. You got this!

That’s all for this week.
